Hotel/Youth hostel in NYC?

Hi,

Anyone from the area (or visited) that could give a recommendation? I've been to NYC 2x's but I've stayed near the airport.

We have friends coming for a visit, and they want to spend a day in NYC before flying out. They will only have one afternoon and then the next morning, so it would be good if they could stay closer.

I understand they will have to pay more the closer they get, but any reasonable priced place would be great. They have 2 teenagers as well.

Thanks in advance.

We were just there this summer and stayed at a place called THE SUTTON RESIDENCE. Was very nice, like being home at someones house and very nice hosts. Dont remember the price, but it was cheap...maybe $130 per night for a double bed.

We also stayed at a place called THE POD HOTEL. A bit more trendy and a bit more expensive. Have a cool balcony as well. It was like $160 a night.

Both were in a nice area, like 51st street and 3rd ave. Also I highly recommend a Thai place near to the Pod Hotel. It was called Ginger House or something like that. Very big, nice portions and VERY GOOD!

Have fun in NYC!!!

Thanks for the tips.

$160 sounded ok for the Pod, but when I called they want $239 for 2 double beds.

Looks like the Sutton Residence has max capacity 3 per room.....

Anyone else have a lead?

Thanks!

I dont remember some others, but we looked for others as well that I found on the site

www.tripadvisor.com

I think it is GREAT and warns of bad places, rip offs, horrible beds and tips on what to expect. You should use it. I have used it during most of my travels and find the oppinions and tips to be very well worth it.

I have friends who stayed at The Pod, as well, and I think they were more around $160 for two doubles. Maybe you can work them down a bit.

I, too, rely on tripadvisor.com for great tips and advice on where to stay.

Thanks everyone.

I used tripadvisor.com and found a double bed room for $119 plus tax, it seems central (42nd and 10th) and got good reviews.

You can also register on www.couchsurfing.com
It is a site where people help travelers with (sometimes free) accommodations.

Don't know if it's too late or not, but if it is, maybe this will help for someone else. I haven't visited any of these yet. I too was looking for a hostel for an upcoming NY trip. I was concerned mainly with price, but they didn't look cheap and dirty.

www.l-hostels.com (It in the upper part of manhattan, but looks really nice)

www.virginiaguesthouse.com

www.broadywayhotelnyc.com

www.newyorkcity-bedandrooms.com
(this one allows random female bunkings, but only co-ed if you book the room privately. $45/night 3 night minumum or $190 for a private booking of 5-6 people. If I'm not mistaken, it's in chelsea. It looks like it doesn't have a lot of common areas, but the bunks are super cute and modern.)

also, you can look around on www.hostelworld.com I've found that to be one of the more user friendly hostel searches.

*Glad to see someone else knows about couchsurfing.com. If you choose to go that route, make sure that you give them enough time to respond. Some people don't check it very often.

Hope this helps someone Smile
