Swedish lamps

I have a problem hanging swedish lamps. Anyone else in this boat with me? Anyone who has a tip (or pic) of how to keep the cords under and up to the ceiling. is there anyone who knows how we are supposed to do it so it looks like it does in the ikea catalog??..haha! they don't even dare show the top part by the ceiling. I am so frustrated and wondering if anyone has a method or something that i am just plan clueless about. THANK YOU!!!

I'm with you on this. We just moved and I marveled at the need to be a minor electrician before getting your lamp up Smile

I'd love to hear what people have to say because the cord is always too long and even my Swede can't get the plastic cup thing on lamps to fit against the ceiling.

There is a special hook to hang the lamps on to make them flush with the ceiling.

There should be some sort of a crimp on the wire that will keep it up.

Still, it's hard to complain- at least it's plug and play! American style ceiling lamps require you to shut off the breakers and wire it. Many hire an electrician for such jobs...

Yes, that's true, but I know what they are talking about. Even with a crimp, one still has to tuck in all that extra cord into the "cup" that is supposed to be nice and flush to the ceiling. Ours looks bad, too. Never looks right.

My biggest complaint is the lack of variety of lamps here. Here is what we are looking for:

We like the color, the shape of the glass "bowls", the fact that it has five lamps, the simplicity of the design (no scrolly things) and how the light is directed upwards instead of down. We can't find anything like it. Everything is either 1 "lamp" per se, or there are 3 lamps in a line....not in a round design as seen here.

There are so many lamp shops, and we have been to about 10 in the Gbg area, but no luck.

I have wires hanging out of 7 places in the ceiling and 4 or 5 in the walls because I cannot find one single light fixture that I like, regardless of price. I'm living with crummy Ikea lamps around the house and cannot wait to get the Christmas lighting going to brighten things up around here.

I would kill for a restoration hardware!

I was walking in Stockholm a few weeks ago, saw a nice floor lamp in the store window, was all ready to go in and buy it, regardless of the price. Upon inspection, the shade attached just like an Ikea shade (not at all proper) and the switch was on the floor--like on the cord leading to the plug. The price tag was 4,000 sek. There was no way I was going to pay that much and have to bend over to turn it on/off. If it'd had a proper shade, I may have purchased it anyhow...but it was the same cheap fitting as others. *shrug* I'll continue on in darkness...

It´s very easy to shorten the cord yourself. Or else just take it to a lamp shop and they could probably help you there.

Hi,
for those in search of lamps, there are two stores ( and probably more) in STockholm that have a decent selection of lighting solutions.
One I think is on Sveavagan, the other is on Sodermalm on Gotagatan (spelled wrong I am sure)

Beka, I think you might have some luck with the sodermalm store, which is on the slussen end of that street.

I am sorry I can not give you store names, may be some one else is familiar with these places.

My Swede ran the cable once from the wall outlet to the ceiling, cut it fit. And then he used some kind of "plug" you can buy from IKEA. If we change the light fixture, just plug it in.
But I still hate the cable visible

Ikea lamps are cheap but if you buy slightly more expensive ones have a little screw on the outside of that white cone that you tighten to hold the cone in place against the ceiling.

I am not sure what you guys are talking about.

Ceiling lamps from IKEA do not come with cords. In other words, they are not sold with electrical equipment.

IKEA sells ceiling shades of various forms, that are attached by hooks to an existing ceiling lamp outlet, that is usually wired already, accomodating one or two light bulbs.

OR: there is some wiring, but it is not in the form of a cord to outlet. We have all kinds of IKEA lamps and they are either shades alone, or, shortly wired lamps.

If you are running cords from wall outlets to the ceiling, you are not doing ceiling lamps. You are putting a wall lamp on a ceiling.

You need a hole in the ceiling with electrical connections already, including bulb fittings in order to hang a ceiling lamp shade.

we are talking about lamps that hang down from the ceiling..not ones that are attached to the ceiling. Then there is a cord hanging down...and lots left over so it makes it impossible to fit under the little cup. i am going to try to cut that cord as suggested. thanks for all of your comments...sometimes we have to remember to think outside the box. we were laughing last night...thank you amerikanska! good luck everyone with those lamps. i will keep my eyes open and let you know if i find your lamp, beka..thanks, liz
